Aberdeen Convention Bureau has welcomed plans for extra floor space at the city's Offshore Europe exhibition and conference.

A report to councillors today outlined plans for additional investment of £1million for additional space following demand for the biennial show at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre, which is worth millions to the North-east economy.

The AECC will host Offshore Europe in September 2011 and hopes to have a new temporary exhibition hall in place.

Jacky Selway, manager of the Aberdeen Convention Bureau, warmly welcomed the news.

"This is fantastic news for Aberdeen and the surrounding area, particularly combined with the hugely ncreased bedroom space and the opening of quality hotels such as Malmaison, Hilton Garden Inn and the Residor Park Inn which will offer much more space for delegates.

"As a member of the Energy Cities Alliance, Aberdeen Convention Bureau works with our counterparts in Calgary, Abu Dhabi and Perth, Australia, to attract conferences to the four ‘Energy Cities'. Offshore Europe 2011 is shaping up to be one of the strongest events yet."

Business tourism represents 20% of total tourism expenditure in Scotland, and is at the high value end of this sector.

Conference delegates stay longer and spend an average of £364 a day, compared to £73 by leisure visitors, providing a considerable boost to the local economy.
